Headaches and migraines can make the simplest of tasks seem impossible. Often times a migraine attack can be accompanied with nausea, vomiting, and painful throbbing in your head. At American Spine, we understand the difficulties and setbacks untreated migraines can cause. Our fully integrated headache management programs allow patients to become a part of their treatment and utilize tools to combat head pain.
There are many kinds of migraines and headaches. Some examples are:
- Cluster headaches: head pain that comes in cycles
- Ocular migraines: affect your vision
- Sinus headaches: pain in the sinus cavity
- Tension headache:
- Hemicrania continua: very rare, continuous headache
- Chronic headaches:
- Status headaches: head pain that lasts for more than 72 hours
Common symptoms of migraines include:
- Pulsating headache
- Localized pain in the front temporal area
- Intensified pain with movement
- Sensitivity to light/sound
- Muscle tenderness
One common symptom we often see coupled with a migraine is called “migraine with aura.” An aura refers to the feelings/symptoms that a person gets before the onset of a headache or migraine. This is a relatively new finding in migraine research and scientists still aren’t sure what the cause of migraines with aura are. Two chemicals in the brain, serotonin and dopamine, do play roles in this relationship. Scientists theorize that the regulation of these brain chemicals is manipulated and causes the brain and immune system to react. The blood vessels in the brain open and constrict to allow the flow of these chemicals. When this happens, a severe throbbing headache or migraine occurs.
Because there is still so much unknown about migraines and the brain, there is no cure for migraines and headaches. However, a doctor can prescribe medications to help prevent them. Adopting new lifestyle changes, avoiding migraine triggers, and medication therapy can help reduce the intensity of your migraines or help get rid of them.
