“Crossing Your Fingers” Could Help Ease Pain

This Blog Talks About…

  • Neuroscientists at the University College London are claiming there are ways you can trick your brain into making pain go away.
  • This finding helps explain the differences in pain experienced by chronic pain patients.
  • American Spine is sharing what this pain-relieving “trick” is, how it works and other ways to ease pain.

There is a unique theory regarding pain, crossing your fingers and spatial positioning. According to investigators at the University of London, the human brain is capable of tricking the body into thinking it’s experiencing severe pain. With that, the team has come up with a way to “fool” your brain into making severe, unexplainable pain disappear with a technique called the “Thermal Grill Illusion.”

The Thermal Grill Illusion

If you hold up your index, middle and ring finger next to each other and apply heat to the two outer fingers and cold to the middle finger, it usually causes your middle finger to experience a burning heat. Because of this, researchers are suggesting individuals with unexplainable cross their middle finger over their index finger to disarm the thermal grill illusion.

Cognitive Neuroscientist Elisa Ferre said to 9 News in Colorado, “Our results showed that a simple spatial pattern determined the burning heat sensation. The brain seemed to use the spatial arrangement of all three stimuli to produce the burning heat sensation on just one finger."

More studies are being conducted to apply this reasoning to new types of therapies and treatments for patients with chronic pain.

If you’re experiencing pain symptoms, there are a few conservative treatment ideas you can try:

  • Physical therapy
  • Psychological counseling
  • Self-massage
  • Non-prescription medication
  • Aromatherapy
  • Meditation
